This book was written to fill what I considered to be a gap in aviation history. Most books on the subject have tittle to say about engine development, but it has been the ongoing improvement, and enlargement, of engines that has made all the rest possible. The relationship between the evolution of engines and that of the whole aircraft has sometimes been direct and simple, sometimes complex. Its most obvious manifestation one might think, has been that more powerful engines have made large planes possible.
